Why Register a Copyright?

While copyright protection exists the moment a work is created, registration provides 'Prima Facie' evidence of ownership in a court of law. Without a registration certificate, taking legal action against infringers (copycats) is extremely difficult. It also creates a public record of your ownership, enabling you to earn royalties through licensing.

  • Prima Facie Evidence of Ownership.
  • Right to Sue for Infringement.
  • Lifetime + 60 Years Validity.
  • Ability to Earn Royalties/License.
  • Global Protection (Berne Convention).
  • Prevent Unwanted Modifications.
  • Statutory Damages Claims.

About Copyright Registration

Technically, copyright exists the moment a work is created. However, Registration is mandatory if you want to file a lawsuit for infringement or claim statutory damages in court. It acts as the ultimate proof of ownership.

  • Applicant Details: ID and Address proof (Pan/Aadhar) of the author/owner.
  • Work Copies: 2 Copies of the work (Source code CD, Manuscript, Image, etc.).
  • NOC: No Objection Certificate from the author (if the applicant is different from the author).

Unlike trademarks which need renewal every 10 years, Copyright is generally valid for the Lifetime of the author plus 60 years. For films and sound recordings, it is 60 years from the year of publication.

No. Copyright protects the expression of an idea, not the idea itself. For example, you cannot copyright the idea of a 'time travel story,' but you can copyright the specific script or book you wrote about it.
